EV chargers in Perth, on a circuit of their own

Tell us where you want to charge, at home or at work. Before your price is final, we check whether your supply can carry a charger on top of everything already running, and tell you straight what the job needs. Then we supply the charger and fit it neatly, with the cable fixed in place.

Signs it is time
When to get charging sorted
You charge from a power point
The Wiring Rules' EV guidance says the point a car plugs into should have a circuit of its own. A power point on a shared circuit does not meet that recommendation.
A second EV is coming
The electrical contractor must make sure the chargers together do not exceed what the supply can carry, so our check covers both cars.
New air conditioning is on the list too
If air conditioning is coming as well, we check the supply for both at once and do the electrical for both in one job.
Start with what your supply can carry
Western Power puts this on the electrical contractor: a charger must not exceed the capacity of the supply. So before your price is final, we work out your home's maximum demand with the charger added.
If the charger fits, the job is a new circuit and its safety switch, plus anything your switchboard needs to take them. If it does not, Western Power names two ways forward: an upgraded connection, which the contractor applies for, or load control on site, such as a smart charger that limits what it draws from the grid. We tell you which suits your home and why.
Single phase or three phase
A 7 kW single phase charger is allowed on a single phase or a three phase home, as long as the supply check says it can take it. Three phase is not needed for it.
So three phase goes on your quote only if your home needs it or you ask for it. When it does, we apply to Western Power for it as your electrical contractor, and they first check it is available at your address.
What the Wiring Rules recommend
In Australia, the Wiring Rules' advice on EV charging sits in an informative appendix, Appendix P. It is guidance, not rules, and it says each charger should have:
- a dedicated circuit of its own
- its own 30 mA safety switch, Type A or better
- protection against DC fault current if it has an EV plug or socket to IEC 62196, from a Type B safety switch or a Type A plus a device that cuts out above 6 mA DC, unless the charger has it built in
- a rating of at least IPX4 and IP4X if it is mounted outdoors
What the rules require
Some of it is not optional. In a home, the charger's circuit must have 30 mA safety switch protection, whatever the appendix says. And equipment must be installed to its maker's instructions, so if your charger's manual calls for a particular circuit or safety switch type, that is a must too.
Our quote marks which parts are a must and which are recommended, so you choose knowing the difference.
How we fit your charger
We choose the spot with you, where the lead reaches the car without trailing across a path. If a spot closer to the switchboard would cost you less, we say so. We run the cable neat and fix it in place, and take the boxes and offcuts with us. Our electrical workmanship is covered for 12 months.
What affects the price
Your quote is the full installed price, GST included, and it holds for the job as described until the date on it. If we have not yet seen your switchboard and where you park, a free site visit confirms the figure before anything is ordered.

- Whether the supply carries the charger as it is, or needs load control on site or an upgraded connection
- Mounting indoors or outdoors

FAQ
Questions people ask
Do I need three phase power for an EV charger?
Not for a 7 kW single phase charger. Western Power allows one on a single phase home, as long as the supply check shows it can take it. We do that check before your price is final.
Do I have to deal with Western Power?
Not for the application. If your charger needs an upgraded connection, the electrical contractor applies to Western Power for it, so we do. Their side runs to their timing, and we say so before you say yes.
What paperwork do I get?
An Electrical Safety Certificate. WA law requires the electrical contractor to give you one for electrical installing work such as a charger circuit. It names the work, the address and the completion date, and certifies that the work has been checked and tested, is safe and complies.
